Daily Writing Meme: Day Eight

What's your favorite genre to write? To read?

Historical Romance. ^^

Growing up it was the only kind of romance novel I chose to read. I always got grief for reading "trashy romance novels" but in my opinion, historicals weren't trashy. The authors had to do so much research to make the stories ring true. They also induced me to branch over into historical fiction (where there wasn't any bodice ripping at all). Historical fiction enticed me to read just actual history. For example, I read a book called The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman. It detailed the life of Richard III. From there I read The Princes in the Tower by Alison Weir, a critical historical look into Richard and the hapless sons of Edward IV. That led directly to reading Richard III by Paul Murray Kendall -- a straight biography of Richard III.

As for writing, I've written a lot more contemporary romance than historical, but I have to admit I enjoyed the historical genre immensely. For me it was pure joy to emmulate all the authors I loved the most growing up. Medieval times are fascinating to me, I think I was born way too late. On the other hand, had I been born in medieval times I'd have been dead long since...I suffered some strange medical problems in my early 20s which would have ended my life if I was alive in the 1200s.
