Good advice!

Thursday night I was able to have dinner at the Rainbow Room in Hollywood with a celebrity I've admired for over 10 years. It was surreal but awesome and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Prior to the meal I was hanging out with him at the Whisky-A-Go-Go and my friend took the bull by the horns. She told him I had published a first book and was happy with it and that it had gotten good reviews, but now I've published a second book and am not happy with it...and it is not getting good reviews. He has also published a book, and his second book will be out next month (not to mention the music he's doing now). After congratulating me on the book he asked if I still have a publishing deal, and I said yes.

His advice was to write my next book and "fuck it!" Not fuck the book of course...but to not worry about criticism. He said he gets criticism all the time and he keeps on doing what he loves. I should do the same thing.

None of this is news to me, but hearing it from him....wow.

I've learned so much about dealing with criticism from watching how celebrities handle it. I've never had one give their philosophy on it to me personally, but I've watched the ones I admire deal with it and keep doing what they love despite naysayers. It must have felt great to hear that advice in person, especially from someone you liked. Sounds like he lived up to your expectations and more! :)

It is true that you can learn a lot about dealing with criticism by watching celebrities. Sometimes it seems easier to watch them do it than to do it yourself ;) Hearing him say so matter of factly to ignore what other people say and do what you love...it was a rush!

Yes...the entire event far exceeded my expectations, and getting that advice just pushed it all over the top!
