Research oddity

My medieval king and his woodsman are passing some time in a far off village in Cornwall. One day they decide to take a walk, and bring some food along with them. Immediately my mind jumps to "meat pasties" and I happily have them purchase some to take along on their walk.

Then, I start to think. Hmm....were there pasties in medieval times? So, I research and find out that while they are a traditional Cornish dish, they didn't surface until the 1700s. They came about when tin miners wanted to have a meal they could carry down mine.

So....the king and woodsman ended up taking a loaf of barley bread on their walk.

You know, I never would have known that but I deeply respect you taking the time to find out - and getting it right. Good work!

:) Thanks!

Ever since the words "bed strings" got changed to "bed springs" during editing w/o me realizing it (and someone complained that I didn't know my Medieval history) I'm super careful... ^^

That's the thing with historical fiction - all of the research. I'm rather paranoid about getting it right yet I know something will slip through as it's really difficult to find out about somethings especially the right terminology.

I always love when an author does her/his research - it shows.

I Don't mind doing the historical research....I wasn't a history major but I *LOVE* history. Research for contemporary fiction is ...a pain in the neck. For me anyway.

hahhaha. sadness is that I knew that and could have told you. I have a thing for pasties that will remain unbridled until I can get to the U.P. in Michigan when Ulkie gets married and have some reaaaaal pasties. mmmmm. mmmm. so hungry now =/

*g* But...I bet they're not Cornish pasties...yes? That's tht thing with my obsession with Cornwall, all the different eras of history overlap in my head. Besides...you *are* a history major!

Not techiiiiinicallly, but supposedly the ones I am thinking of / wanted Ulkie's boyfriend to bring me are as close as you could get to finding the closest to the Cornish type. But, he's a wrestler, so he was like, bah? Why is there corn in meat? Baaah?

So, I gave up and decided I'd do it myself one of these years <3.

I want to go to Cornwall some day, and eat a pasty whilst looking out over the ocean. And I want to watch the sun come up from the edge of the deep green sea.

Some day.
