It's a little like writer's block

But, not entirely.

I submitted a short story, and it was rejected. The reason? Well, it doesn't have a happy ending. It's not a sad ending, it's pretty bittersweet. But, I suppose it wouldn't leave the reader satisfied.

Now, the thing is, it is a prequel to a much longer story. I wrote it at least seven years ago when being published was a pipe dream. It's a sprawly, sloppy mess of a story. I've always had in mind to rewrite it, and make it into a proper novel and not merely a collection of connected short stories. Now I have the drive to do that, because I know that the story I submitted (the one that was rejected) is a good story.

Yesterday I decided to get myself around to actually starting on the process. First I was defeated by Word. I'm half a dozen steps closer to ditching Word 97 and upgrading to Word 2007, and this might just be the shove I need.

More importantly though, I froze on taking that first story in the series and re-writing it into something that makes more sense, and more importantly, something that ties into that short story. It's a daunting task. I made a false start, and I know which direction I need to go in, I just have to take the plunge and do it.

Writing is not my profession, which is why it took me 3 years to write The King's Tale. I have a full time job, a house, a son, a husband, and a dog. Finding the time to carve out for myself and just write is difficult. Our house is small (heck, we live in Southern California, everyone's house in our neighborhood is small) so my "office" is a long desk I share with my husband in our bedroom. One of these days our son will move out, and then we'll have a proper office.

I'm very particular about my writing habits. I have to type on my desktop with the ergonomic keyboard. I work better in the morning. I get distracted very easily. I've tried writing on my laptop, but the keyboard just doesn't work for me. And, the screen is too small.

I have the drive and ambition to wrestle this story into submission, I just currently don't have the time.

But I will, hopefully sooner than later.
